Sydney Decoration + Design 2013 - Part 3

The final instalment of my Sydney trip to attend Decoration+Design. I shared my product faves with you in Part 1, and focused solely on the gorgeous Abigail Ahern in Part 2. Finally, I get to sift through the image banks of Greg Natale and bring you my favourites.

Greg’s seminar took us on a journey starting back with his inspiration as a child and knowing quite early on what he wanted to be and do.

It all started with Alexis’ glamourous horn-legged desk in Dynasty (although Natale admits that if he was to have one now, it would definitely be faux) and trying to update his parents house. Unlike other children his age, he spent his summer holidays stripping wallpaper and painting his parent’s place in an attempt to rid them of their dated decor.

Natale insists that “influence can come from anywhere”. Television shows, movies, travels, art, or whatever strikes a cord with the client. He was once asked to design an apartment to strongly resemble Lauren Bacall’s glamourous apartment in the movie Designing Woman (1957). I can see the Hollywood glamour in this still resonating with his designs.

Another early influence was the late, great David Hicks, designer to the royals and upper echelons of UK society. His bold use of colour and pattern has obviously impacted on Greg’s own design aesthetic.

When speaking on an early project for a couple with differing tastes, his approach was to mesh the personalities of the occupants. Colour and pattern can mix with clean and classic. Modern furniture can be placed next to vintage pieces. Bold, chaotic walls teamed with simple streamlined furniture. The project should be a blended presentation of the clients tastes, style and passions.

Although Greg admits, he has told the client no occasionally when something just does not fit in his image of the design.

I do wonder if that is a luxury of notoriety. It begs the question, does all work have to be something you would be proud to put on display? Real debate can be had on what point in your career do you possibly sacrifice clients (and their money) for your personal vision. What price do you put on your core principles? Something to think about anyway.

On to more recent projects, you will notice his growing love affair with Jonathan Adler pieces, which has now resulted in a friendship and rapport with the trend-setter - Lucky him!! His projects and collaborations have also lead him to be in contact with the gorgeous Kelly Wearstler (again, jealous!)

Expanding his services to include architecture as well as interiors, not to mention fabulous product collaborations with Designer Rugs and wallpaper for Porter’s Paints with more on the way, there seems to be no stopping the rise of the Greg Natale business, brand or man.

PS. Greg’s go-to white paint colour is Dulux Lexicon quarter. A simple standard that provides a clean backdrop without harsh brightness.
